Construction Dreamcloud Support
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Support
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Support
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Support
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
