Construction Dreamcloud vs Alexander Hybrid

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Alexander Hybrid

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud vs Alexander Hybrid

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Alexander Hybrid

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
