Construction Dreamcloud vs Level Sleep
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Level Sleep
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their view too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud vs Level Sleep
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Level Sleep
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
