Construction Dreamcloud vs Lucid
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud vs Lucid
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud vs Lucid
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Lucid
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
