Construction Dreamcloud vs Mint
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Mint
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Mint
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Mint
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
