Construction DreamCloud vs Nest Alexander Hybrid
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. DreamCloud vs Nest Alexander Hybrid
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. DreamCloud vs Nest Alexander Hybrid
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. DreamCloud vs Nest Alexander Hybrid
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
