Construction Dreamcloud vs Sleepovation
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud vs Sleepovation
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their view too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud vs Sleepovation
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud vs Sleepovation
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
