Construction I The Dreamcloud Bed Good For Very Heavy People?
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. I The Dreamcloud Bed Good For Very Heavy People?
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. I The Dreamcloud Bed Good For Very Heavy People?
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. I The Dreamcloud Bed Good For Very Heavy People?
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
