Construction Is Dreamcloud Worth It
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Is Dreamcloud Worth It
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Is Dreamcloud Worth It
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Is Dreamcloud Worth It
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
