Construction Natuzzi Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Natuzzi Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Natuzzi Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Natuzzi Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
