Construction Novaform vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Novaform vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Novaform vs Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Novaform vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
