Construction Puff vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Puff vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Puff vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Puff vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
