Construction Sleepy’s Slumber 13.5″ Pillow Top Encased Coil Mattress vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Sleepy’s Slumber 13.5″ Pillow Top Encased Coil Mattress vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to give their view too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Sleepy’s Slumber 13.5″ Pillow Top Encased Coil Mattress vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Sleepy’s Slumber 13.5″ Pillow Top Encased Coil Mattress vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
