Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our standards for what a quality mattress should have. With eight unique layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all the proper materials in its construction. Stearns And Foster vs Dreamcloud
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mix of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid mattresses.
Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you are looking to sink into a mattress, move on from the DreamCloud.
A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Stearns And Foster vs Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Stearns And Foster vs Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Stearns And Foster vs Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Stearns And Foster vs Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
