Construction Whakes Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Whakes Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
Firmness
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Whakes Dreamcloud
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Whakes Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
