Construction Who Owns Dreamcloud Mattress
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Who Owns Dreamcloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
Firmness
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Pressure Map
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
Motion Transfer
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Who Owns Dreamcloud Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
Sinkage Test
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Who Owns Dreamcloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
Edge Support
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
